Somme for 11 year olds. Book suggestion?

I want to send my 11 year old nephew a book about the Somme, because someone said it's coming up to the Centenary. News to me. Anyway...

I don't want to overwhelm him, just to send something suitable for his age group, something he might enjoy and actually read.

Any suggestions, please?

Thank you!

Gwyn,

The Somme by Sarah Ridley is aimed at readers 11 and up.  But at only 48 pages might be a little 'light'.  You can find more info on Amazon Books.

When I first started reading about the War (probably around 15 years old) I found Lyn Macdonald's book very interesting. I liked the personal experience aspect of her books. There is a volume covering the Somme. This might be a good introduction as it's not too 'heavy' with politics and strategy etc.
