Book Covers

The Scorer

Recommended Posts

I have a lot of books which I carry around with me from time to time.

When I do, there's a risk of the cover or the dust jacket being torn or defaced (sorry, DJC!), so I'd like to get some covers for them if I can. Can anyone recommend a good supplier(s) of these, please?

Thank you.

I use plastic bags. If you search around (they may not be that easily available) there are plastic bags with a plastic zip. They come in large packets and in various sizes.

I also store delicate books in bags to stop them being knocked about.

I used to be able to use nylon bags that software came in, but now that everything seems to be download I haven't seen them for some time.

However, you can also get from large stationary, etc stores, rolls of nylon sheeting (and maybe from some building stores or packaging), and using the tape which is sold (get through Amazon; not usually in shops), book repair tape - it looks like a wide sellotape, and that lasts and lasts whether you make a cover for each book or a large bag to keep a  lot in. The book repair tape doesn't dry out like sellotape.

Watch out for storing books in some sorts of clear plastic - it may degrade and become sticky, or transfer acidity to the book thus starting the paper degradation process. A non-acid plastic (the name I know is Melinex) is the conservation-grade variant used for long-term storage.  Acid-free tissue paper can be got quite easily, I believe, as dressmakers also use it for storage.

I protect my cloth covered books with 'easy fold' book film,  which is easily removable and protects against handling and makes the book look

nice. I protect my dust jackets with 'trimsleeve' dustwrapper protection , which is an adjustable dust wrapper sleeve with clear plastic film and

white paper backing , easy to apply and protects against tears, creasing , dust and moisture. I can recommend both products , which I buy from

D&M Packaging supplies Ltd. The size of 'Trimsleeve I use is 330mm x 50 meters and it costs £ 38.76 for one roll , which covers aprox 80+books.

Simple. Take the jacket off and leave it at home.

I'm tempted to deploy my knees.

On topic, thanks for the tips, particularly Mr Filsell.

Do try D&M

I have .... they do a lot, don't they?

It looks good stuff, so I'll have to see what I want and how to get it.

Thanks, everyone, for your help.

I have just received a couple of second hand books, and to my surprise they come from a library. Both are enclosed in covers marked:

"Adjustable LYF Jacket".

I don't know library supply stores in your region of the world (however, D&M does have some stuff - see below), but I maintain a supply of rolls of mylar for covering non-jacketd books, and dust jacket protectors in various sizes for covering jackets. All books get covered before hitting the shelves.

Links to a US supplier to get an idea of what I'm talking about:

D&M products similar to the mylar and jacket covers I use, but covers available only in small quantities:

Agreed on the use of plastic bags - don't. Always use proper protection. Also, the covers often come with a tape/adhesive that can be used to stick the cover to its paper backer (where it has one). I don't even use those. No tape goes near covers or books unless it's acid free, and even then, only when absolutely necessary, which is almost never.
