I am trying to trace the whereabouts of the 7th Battalion of the York And Lancaster Regiment. My grandfather, Pte Noel Helliwell 37590, joined up I think in 1916, probably as a result of conscription. The exact date or place of enrolment is not known. A post card to him dated July 1917 was sent to "a comp(?) 4 Platoon, Pioneers BEF France.

Can any one shed any light on the whereabouts of this platoon in 1917? I known that BEF is the British Expeditionary Force, but what was their actual task?

By the end of 1917 Noel had been injured and had found his way back to London, then in early 1918 was transfered to the Wharncliffe Hospital, Sheffield.

Like many who fought in the wars, he never talked about it, and only now when he is gone, do we want to know more about what went on.

Many thanks Chris for your reply. I will follow up on these.

Also to Glyn for the photo of Wharncliffe Hospital - that's the first i've seen.
