t.ryan Posted 21 February , 2023 Share Posted 21 February , 2023 JMB, As the photo gets larger it distorts the numbers a little. The first number is to hard to call but when photo smaller the ?97 is much clearer to see, especially the tail on the 7 . I was waiting for a better photo but could not find one. One for the parts number list only at this stage X97. Cheers TR

t.ryan Posted 22 February , 2023 Share Posted 22 February , 2023 (edited) JMB, If these three very clearly stamped smiling tigers check out with you, then with them; going on your latest count you should now have the 200th smiling tiger accounted for. Numbers 7973, 9851 and 9957 which do not appear to be listed so far. These are all from the same source over your way Cheers TR Edited 22 February , 2023 by t.ryan Add extra info. JMB1943 Posted 23 February , 2023 Author Share Posted 23 February , 2023 TR, All three are previously unrecorded, so that does put us at 200! I didn't think that we would get here this early in the year. What is "the same source over my way"? Not eBay, because I check that every day. t.ryan Posted 23 February , 2023 Share Posted 23 February , 2023 JMB, Great, good to finally reach the 200. WorthPoint. Most of them had already shown as being sold but they have accounted for quite a few on the list. Cheers, TR
t.ryan Posted 23 February , 2023 Share Posted 23 February , 2023 JMB It has been a rainy day here in more ways than one. Now that we have the magical 200 on board, I came across a few more smiling tiger numbers today. I will give you the numbers to check out, they appear all good but I will upload the photo,s once you have checked them and ruled out any you already have. Numbers 107, 1166, 1527, 2849, 3572, 4537, 7860 and 8712; one good litter in this lot and all reasonably clear numbers except for the 1 on the 107 bayonet. JMB1943 Posted 23 February , 2023 Author Share Posted 23 February , 2023 Mr Ryan, What a haul, talk about raining cats and dogs! Those are all new tigers, and I think that I’ll post an updated list at the end of the month. Probably at the end of every month if they keep coming at this rate. Thanks for taking the time to chase down these US-based examples. Regards, JMB
t.ryan Posted 23 February , 2023 Share Posted 23 February , 2023 JMB Just happened to find these 8 all together on the same site mentioned above when I thought I would put in a search after adding those other 3 yesterday, I was surprised to see how many there were on their site. It is worth a look, searched for "1920 Contract Siamese Bayonets", at the top of their page; just find one of the bayonets being advertised and go to the top of their page to do a search. There were 3 pages of them, some numbers that you have already listed, these 8, then several more that there was no way of viewing the actual number. Yes, It would be good to see an updated list, something to check the numbers on before we upload any more that are already listed. t.ryan Posted 25 February , 2023 Share Posted 25 February , 2023 JMB The list looks great and it will be much easier to spot and check any new smiling tiger numbers that show up. I was a little miffed when you updated your first list as it looked a little light on in numbers, but that was quickly squashed when I got to the second list containing the 208 numbers. JMB I did notice that some of the 9000 numbers have jumped the que somehow. It has taken a while sorting out these Siamese numerals but I think we have them covered fairly well now. Learning about Siamese numerals was not even a thought for me until a couple of years ago when I joined in on this post. It has been a good hunt so far and I am sure there will be more to discover. Cheers, TR
JMB1943 Posted 25 February , 2023 Author Share Posted 25 February , 2023 TR, You have every right to feel miffed! That first update is light on numbers, but I didn’t discover that until I was doing the second update. The problem arises from using cut-and-paste to generate the new columns. The “cut” was 100% effective, but the “paste” was only about 70% effective. Comparing my Excel list with the table took a very long time yesterday afternoon. I shall give the table another tweak today to re-sequence the 9000’s. Regards, JMB
JMB1943 Posted 25 February , 2023 Author Share Posted 25 February , 2023 Mr Ryan, Third update, and still 208 in the count! I must have eliminated all of the operator errors.......for now. My daughter's husband is in the Run Silent, Run Deep branch of the US Navy and they are currently stationed in Pearl Harbour. Next week we are off to visit them for a couple of weeks, so no updated lists until end of March. Good hunting at Bathurst Gun Show. t.ryan Posted 26 February , 2023 Share Posted 26 February , 2023 JMB Your hard work as all payed off very well, we now have an easy (growing) list to glance through to check any newfound smiling tiger numbers against before adding. Plenty of sad military history in Pearl Harbour to check out, enjoy your trip; hope we have a few new smiling tiger numbers for you to add on your return. We have number 1 & number 10000; just got to fill in the gap now, Ha Ha. Looking forward to Bathurst, have not been to a show for some time now. Phil B Posted 1 March , 2023 Share Posted 1 March , 2023 I’ve started my own tiger breeding program. A couple of interesting things about the scabbards is that some of the metal ones have the bottom piece brazed on backwards. As you can see one isn’t brazed at all and is attached with staples. The bottom one has an original leather scabbed that I was lucky to find last year. Yes there are 12 of them , sadly I only have 8 rifles at the moment but will hunt some down in the near future. The fantastic looking display board was given to me by a really good mate . And will have the leather scabbard and a bayonet with a close number mounted on it
t.ryan Posted 1 March , 2023 Share Posted 1 March , 2023 Phil B, You do have a good smiling tiger bayonet breeding program going, in fact I do not think we will ever see that many together in the one place again unless you are adding to and updating your collection. You also now own 1/20th of the number of smiling tiger bayonets on JMBs newest list above; well done. Looks like you are only in need for 2 all metal scabbards, I will keep a look out in my travels. Your also very lucky to have scored the original leather scabbard clearly showing the smiling tiger face and number 4720 (calling the last figure 0). I have noticed that some of the all metal scabbards have no brazing but 2 rivets holding the locket to the replacement metal tube. mcb9022 Posted 7 March , 2023 Share Posted 7 March , 2023 Hello all. This is such an interesting thread and a huge amount of work in collecting the serial numbers of existing Smiling Tiger bayonets. I found this bayonet for sale, see attached picture. As far as I can see it's a number not yet recorded, 1326 but others can confirm. Cheers Mark
t.ryan Posted 7 March , 2023 Share Posted 7 March , 2023 mcb 9022 Number 1326 is correct and it will be a new one for for the smiling tiger list. JMB is away at the moment but I am sure he will be pleased to have those extra eyes out there looking for any new numbers that show up. mcb9022 Posted 8 March , 2023 Share Posted 8 March , 2023 Good morning all. Here is another "smiling tiger" for the database. Possibly 8079? It hasn't been registerred before in the database as far as I can see. Cheers Mark
t.ryan Posted 8 March , 2023 Share Posted 8 March , 2023 mcb9022 I would read that number as 4078 and it also looks to be a new number for JMB's smiling tigers list. Looks like someone has a nice Siamese rifle and bayonet set there. Cheers TR
JMB1943 Posted 9 March , 2023 Author Share Posted 9 March , 2023 PhilB, Thanks for posting that great photo of your litter of 12 tigers. I cannot enter the serials until I get home, but in the meantime would appreciate an accurate weight (in grams, if possible; I use an electronic kitchen scale) of each bayonet ( not scabbards). Trajan and I have previously looked into weights of the Patt 1907 bayonet as a measure of wartime QC. We only had about 10 smiling tigers in that group, but they were a little heavier than the regular’07 Bayonets, IIRC. Your batch of tigers would enable us to confirm (or not) that initial observation. Regards, JMB
