The Long, Long Trail:

West Yorkshire Regiment

14th (Reserve) Battalion

Formed in Falmouth, November 1914, as a Service battalion, part of K4.

Why / how was a Battalion of the West Yorkshire Regiment formed in Falmouth?

Were they local men?

How can I find out more?

Kath.

Hello Kath,

14th Bn, The West Yorkshire Regiment was initially formed as a service battalions of Fourth New Army. The battalions were formed in the various Coast Defences and were to be formed from the Reserve and Extra Reserve Battalions of the corresponding regiment. As you will see, 4th (Extra Reserve) Bn of the West Yorks were at Falmouth in August 1914 which probably shows why 14th Bn was formed there as well.

Wienand

They would normally be men local to the Regiment`s area. I suppose they would go to places like Falmouth because the Y&L couldn`t handle and train all their recruits at their depot and because, at places like Falmouth, they could serve a sort of Home Guard function guarding docks etc. Phil B

Nothing in Wyrell's "The West Yorkshire Regiment in the War 1914-18". (They don't even get a mention!)
