delta Posted 9 November , 2016 Share Posted 9 November , 2016 Grateful for a pal's guidance and input. The Official history of the Great War shows that Lt Gen Charles Woollcombe was in command of 11 (Northern) Division at the end of September 1916. I find this most intriguing as Lt Gen normally commanded a corps, indeed the mother site shows he was to command IV Corps from December 16. Grateful for an explanation as to why he commanded a division at this point?
Ron Clifton Posted 9 November , 2016 Share Posted 9 November , 2016 (edited) His immediate predecessor was Maj-Gen E A Fanshawe, who was promoted on 5 July 1916 to command V Corps (replacing H D Fanshawe, who was his brother and was sacked). It was probably a case of finding, at short notice, a suitably senior officer who was unattached at the time - Woollcombe had been serving at home up till then.
