I would be grateful if a member with a little time on their hands do a look-up on the SDGW for the soldiers of the 1st Bn Essex Regt who were drowned on the Royal Edward on 13/8/15 as a result of it being torpedoed whilst en-route to Gallipoli.

Most of thse soldiers had transfered as volunteers from the Norfolk Regiment to the Essex Regiment.

I hope i haven't asked too much but any info would be greatly received

Jamie

Merry Christmas!!!

Hi Jamie,

I hope this helps:

Nurse, John William, 1st Bn. Essex Regiment, 20729

http://www.cwgc.org/cwgcinternet/casualty_...casualty=683086

and:

Otty, John, 1st Bn. Essex Regiment, 20728

http://www.cwgc.org/cwgcinternet/casualty_...casualty=683104

Both died on 13/8/15. Info found here:

http://www.cwgc.org/cwgcinternet/cemetery_...ry=76100&mode=1

There is no mention of the sinking of the Royal Edwards in Burrows: Essex Units in the War 1914-1919, 1st Battalion Essex Regiment Vol. 1, 1923.

Not all that surprising I suppose, as the poor chaps never got a chance to join the 1st Bn. :(

Regards,

Michael

Jamie,

Have just seen your request for Essex casualties on the Royal Edward

I have the Cape Helles Memorial Reg. & have separated the men into Regts.

When I get back home I can forward the names if still wanted.

I have found descendants of men on the ship- NURSE - is one name, but am away from my own pc so do not have details with me.

Kath.
