British or French Mess Tin ?

Hi Guys,

I picked this tin up several years ago. It seemed like an oddball and I thought I would get it to see if I could identify it. It has no maker marks and looks like a British Mess tin although it is smaller and an oval shape. I have photographed it beside a Canadian made tin for comparison. I have found a few posts saying it is French private purchase, but have no solid information about it.  Any information would be appreciated.

I don't think it is made to any war department standards and is most probably made for the camping fraternity such as the Scouts etc.

Hi,

I've never seen a mess tin like that in French equipement but but I'm far from having seen everything in my life ! In my opinion if this mess tin is French it's a civilian made not for military purpose. But lake of makers is curious it should be at least a manufacturer's marking ?

Thanks for your input. I appreciate your thoughts on this. I never had a thought that this is an "Issue" piece. I am wondering whether anyone has an advertisement or picture of its use as a private purchase item; perhaps officer's private purchase kit? Either English or French ?I like the idea it may be used by the scouting fraternity; this is really a possibility, but I would like some information on this idea as well.

All the best,
