Can anyone tell me if the signalling sargeant came under the HQ Company in a battalion in 1914?, Also were the machine guns also under HQ Coy and used as and when they were needed around the battalion or were they actually a part of the individual rifle companys?. obviously at this time there was no equivalant to a modern day support company.

Sigs sgt was HQ staff. there was an officer with overall responsibility, and, as it was a vital aspect, this was often the adjutant.

The MG section was also HQ, again under an officer who was double-hatted, being expected to command a platoon in addition. How this worked in war, the mind boggles. He had a sergeant, and there were only two MGs so could not be doled out to the four companies.
