JustinL Posted 22 December , 2004 Share Posted 22 December , 2004 Having splashed out on the MIC of my great-uncle, Lionel Levy, I was surprised by the wealth of information it contained. I now that the 18th battalion (1st Public Schools) was disbanded in April 1916 after many (3,000!) of the men were persuaded (!?) to become officers. Lionel must have bowed to the pressure. My posting from yesterday shows in the officer cadet uniform. Can anybody please tell me the movements and activities of the battalion between its arrival in France on 1 November 1915 and disbandment? Many thanks and Merry Christmas
PhilB Posted 22 December , 2004 Share Posted 22 December , 2004 18 RF arrived France Nov 15, to 19brig 33 div 27/11/15. To GHQ troops 26/2/16, till disbanded 24/4/16. This means they would only have seen action in 3 months with 33 div at a time when there were no major actions. Hope that helps! Phil B
Paul Reed Posted 22 December , 2004 Share Posted 22 December , 2004 They spent most of their time occupying the Cuinchy sector during this period; Cuinchy village and the Brickstacks. Billets in Bethune and surrounding villages.
JustinL Posted 23 December , 2004 Author Share Posted 23 December , 2004 Thanks, guys. I had a suspicion that the division was somewhere around Bethune. Paul - What were the Brickstacks? Merry Christmas to you both.
PhilB Posted 23 December , 2004 Share Posted 23 December , 2004 They were just that, Justin - stacks of bricks at a Cuinchy brickworks site! But the scene of much action. Cheers Phil B
