The 2 Volume 1938 edition is available online at Archive.org.  The Preface to Volume 1 says it is a "popular" edition. Total  numbered pages two volumes 2108. Found some references that the page count for the six volume original editions were

469, 449, 596, 602, 464, 406 (=total 2986)

Is the 2 vol version abridged compared to the 6 vol one?

The dust jacket for the 2-vol. edition states :-

"This special edition is complete and unabridged. It contains the original million-word text (with essential revisions) together with scores of invaluable photographs, maps etc.".
