chrisclare Posted 23 December , 2004 Share Posted 23 December , 2004 My great grandfather was Frederich Willem Treuge who served with the Northumberland fusilliers and his brother Albert with the Queens Westminsters. Both were sons of a prussian immigrant and although Frederich survived the war (only to be killed in WW2 while extinguishing a fire as a reserve fireman after a German bomb) Albert was KIA at Arras. Any thoughts on why Frederich might have used "William" as his christian name and how can I find out more info on my great grandfathers war service. Many thanks. Chris. sandyford Posted 23 December , 2004 Share Posted 23 December , 2004 Chris Your great grandfather, Frerich Wilhelm's medal index card from the MIC online, shows 2 numbers which are 7th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers Territorial Force numbers. The first number with the 7 in front of it shows that he was with this battalion before the March 1917 renumbering, and then the later 6 figure number is also a 7th Battalion number. If you look on the main website there is a section (Units & armies, I think) which tells you of the movements of this battalion. Do you have his medals or any information on where he lived, age etc.? chrisclare Posted 29 December , 2004 Author Share Posted 29 December , 2004 Thank´s for the information! Spent Christmas on this fantastic web-site -much to the bemusement of my wife! On the 1901 census he is listed as Frederick William (Not the germanic Freidrich Wilhem Treuge and I know that before the war he was a barber in Exeter (1907 kelly´s direct.) Why would he have enlisted in the Northumberlands if he was from the westcountry? Where do I go from here to find out more about his war service? Many thanks to you all. Regards, Chris.
