How long to be discharged?

Can anyone tell me how long a soldier took to be discharged after being deemed to be unfit for service? My Grandfather was gassed in early 1915 and was discharged on April 16th 1916-what sort of time scale would we be talking about from say being gassed to being discharged?

Hi Manx that would entirely depend on the seriousness and debility caused. As we know from other posts cases could be away for a year or more before finally being returned to the front. Most likely a year or so may well be an appropriate length of time to allow recuperation to take place until it became clear the individual was never going to be fit enough, not only for active service, but so disabled as to be of no further use to the army in any capacity, which is what we are talking about.
