Hi there,

Can anyone help with any info on this man ?

Thomas Scriven was born in Alveley, Shropshire in 1876.

After returning from active duty during the boer war, he returned to England and became a Policeman. ( Cheshire Constabulary)

Following the outbreak of war in 1914 he became an "Old Contemptible"

I am keen to find out the name of his regiment or any other info.

Any help or advise would be very much appreciated.

Kindest Regards

Margaret

Margaret,

There are 6 hits on the online medal index cardds on the NA site. The first one listed is for ----

Thomas Walter Scriven

Private, 20076

Cheshire Regiment.... this would tie in with the Cheshire Const.

Here's the results from the search - Thomas Scriven search

Margaret,

I suggest you have a look at the Long Long Trail (link at top left of page). This will give you a lot of information about how to search for your man.

If you download the Medal Index Card as Les has suggested and post it people will be able to assist further. 'Old Contemptibles' usually refers to the British Expeditionary Force that went to the Western Front in 1914. They were regular soldiers and territorials. Many men joined after this, specifically for war service, and did not go to France until 1915 or later. Hopefully the MIC will give you an entry date and whether he served in 1914. If he went to the WF in 1914 he will usually have been awarded the 1914 Star. Men who commenced war service in 1915 were generally awarded the 1914/15 Star. All men who saw active service were also awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal. The MIC will confirm this and give an indication of his service.
