Stannington Roll Of Honour 1914-20

I am trying to identify Herbert Tonks from Oughtibridge, near Sheffield. Oughtibridge is in the rural district of Wortley, in the Parish of Bradfield.

can anybody confirm that

Name: TONKS

Initials: H E

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Private

Regiment: Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment)

Unit Text: 1st Bn.

Age: 27

Date of Death: 27/05/1918

Service No: 60678

Additional information: Son of the late Henry and Elizabeth Tonks, of Atherstone, Warwickshire

is my man.

The 1901 census shows him working in the area, making bricks. He is listed as aged 13. This would make him older than the man above. I think he may have lied to the enumerator because he was working. It would appear he was working with his brothers - there are no parents.

Thanks in advance

Robert.

Info from SDGW

60678 Harry Edward Tonks

Born-Atherstone Warwick

Enlisted-Retford Notts

Residence-Nuneaton.

So I would say he is not your man.

Thanks Doug.

So, if he's Harry Tonks, not Herbert, I've got a bit of a mystery on my hands. None of the other 'H Tonks' look right on the CWGC site.

I wonder if he - died later of wounds, say after 1920. His name appears in a church in Oughtibridge. I don't know when the memorial was erected though.

Can anybody help ??

Regards

Robert.

The Herbert Tonks born in Oughtibridge is aged 3 in the 1891 census and is living at that time at Fouracres, Bradfiled.

The family consists of dad William (45), mother Sarah (42), and sons Samuel (16), John (14), Willie (10), Fred (8) and herbert (3). Also, daughters Lizzie (12) and Emma (5).

Dad William and son Samuel are recorded as Labourers and John is a brick carrier. The other children are scholars. Mum, Dad and Samuel were born in Lye, Worcestershire and the remaining children were all born in Oughtibridge.

Hope this helps.

Good luck

Steve

Name: TONKS, JAMES HERBERT

Rank: Private

Regiment: 10th (Prince of Wales's Own Royal) Hussars

Age: 26

Date of Death: 13/11/1914

Additional information: Son of the late William and Sarah Tonks.

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Given the SD reference and the NOK details I would say it is pretty conclusive.
