Shell Markings

Hello, Susan -  It is a relatively common Mark II shell case for the British 18pdr. field gun, manufactured in 1916 by "RL" (Royal Laboratory in Woolich).  The "CFF" reveals that it had a reloaded full charge, meaning that it was used and then reloaded and reused.  It is quite possible that it was used on the Western Front during 1916 and then again later.  [The largest expenditure of artillery ammunition during 1916 was on the Somme.]  I hope that this information helps.  Regards, Torrey

The consumption of artillery ammunition at home or in other parts of the Empire - moslty for practice - will have been tiny in comparison with the huge bombardments on the Western Front, so this case's use in France or Flanders must be very much more probable than alternative explanations. I've not heard of any way to track a cartridge to any specific unit, though.

I think the Lot No. relates only to the primer, not the whole round.

The primer was made by ALCO - the American Locomotive COmpany.
