alliekiwi Posted 1 June , 2007 Share Posted 1 June , 2007 What about Biggles: Adventures in time. Honestly, that has to be in the top ten for certain! And it even left room for a sequel. I was devasted when one wasn't made. Allie
59165 Posted 1 June , 2007 Share Posted 1 June , 2007 The WW2 Russian film "Come And See" is the best war film hands down for me. A good film, yes.I was told that for some scenes they used live ammo! Explains the exploding trees maybe. One of my faves will always be The Dambusters & for more modern,Enemy at the gates.
PBI Posted 1 June , 2007 Share Posted 1 June , 2007 "Come and See" is a fair Film, but not worth all the Accolades heaped upon it,i found the First Hour a real Chore to watch. The Village scenes however were very well presented.Thank Goodness for the Fast Forward function on my DVD player. Regulus 1 Posted 5 June , 2007 Share Posted 5 June , 2007 Concerning WW I Stosstrup 1917 Westfront 1918 Wings All quiet on the Western Front - 1930 Morgenrot - 1933 Dawn Patrol
wainfleet Posted 6 June , 2007 Share Posted 6 June , 2007 For WW1: All Quiet, Westfront 1918, and Tell England, which you should see if you can – 1931 movie about Gallipoli; forget the sometimes dreadful overacting and enjoy the build up of tension and the astonishing action scenes. Also – but ONLY for the songs – Oh What A Lovely War. For WW2: A Walk in the Sun, Twelve O’Clock High, and The Cruel Sea seem to come close to conveying the stress and confusion for land, air and sea respectively. I too saw “The Odd Angry Shot” years ago, thought it was excellent and don't know why it doesn't get shown more often. Maybe it's considered too intelligent for Joe Public? beersheba Posted 7 June , 2007 Share Posted 7 June , 2007 Can i also sneak in "the man who would be king" as a war film.??? If not then "god's Holy Trouser's" why not..
Steven Broomfield Posted 7 June , 2007 Share Posted 7 June , 2007 Went the day well (cos of johney mills) Hate to say this, but he wasn't in "Went the day well". I'm at work, so can't get to my DVD, but I'm sure I'm right on this...trust me. Excellent film, though. Can I also say that I recently bought "Dunkirk" on DVD, and watching it again, I was a bit less whelmed than before. It's a bit long, to be frank, and the scene-setting political bits are a bit dull. It all comes over as being a bit worthy...but the scenes set in France are great, and J Mills is as good as ever. And "Battle of Algires" I've never seen - a treat in store at Harbour Lights, Southampton, in two weekends' time!

loganshort Posted 7 June , 2007 Share Posted 7 June , 2007 original All Quiet on the Western Front and A Very Long Engagement ..Great! Regarding The Trench, which I really enjoyed and only persuaded my wife recently to watch because the new James Bond stars in it, one of you remarked that he didnt think young soldiers swore that much! Quite a few of the old soldiers accounts mention the "strong" language that was used in the trenches. I think I would have as well during a bombardment or if i had been singled out to go over and repair the wire! Strong language wasnt invented by todays youth. It was there strong and vibrant in the trenches!

womo Posted 7 June , 2007 Share Posted 7 June , 2007 Hi Guys, I dont know whether I can class this as a film as its really a tv mini series, but was something I found really good; ANZACS. I managed to get hold of it on DVD a few months ago and have watched at least twice. A nice work and you really feel the comeraderie amongst the young Aussies. I thought it deserved a mention though not a film. Regards, Womo
