Simon J Emmerson Posted 12 October , 2019 Share Posted 12 October , 2019 Can anyone help me please. I'm after any information regarding Drummer F Bayles 16th Bn RWF. I've searched the medal Index cards and had no luck. Regards Simon.
Admin Michelle Young Posted 12 October , 2019 Admin Share Posted 12 October , 2019 First writing looks like J Bayliss, have you tried that? Michelle
Simon J Emmerson Posted 12 October , 2019 Author Share Posted 12 October , 2019 Hi Michelle. Yes I've tried Bayliss Bayles Boyles Boyless No doubt someone will find him straight away.
Admin Michelle Young Posted 12 October , 2019 Admin Share Posted 12 October , 2019 I don't have Ancestry access, sorry.
clive_hughes Posted 12 October , 2019 Share Posted 12 October , 2019 He's not a Bayles: either Bayliss or Bayless. Only one Bayless in the RWF medal index cards, (Frederick Bayless) but his number in the 65,000s is for a far later enlistment than 1914-15. There was a Frank H. Bayliss 35853 but he'd already served overseas with KRRC Nov. 1914 before transferring? It might depend on the initial: is it F. or J. as Michelle suggests - or even a very florid S? If so, no John or James Bayliss, or Samuel or Sidney. It's always possible that he didn't proceed overseas (or not initially as a RWF, which would skew the search results). Dave66 Posted 12 October , 2019 Share Posted 12 October , 2019 (edited) Possible contender may be this chap, Frederick Bayless, R.W.F. then labour corps...https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?_phsrc=bXV12&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&indiv=1&dbid=1262&gsln=Bayless&gsfn_x=NN&gsln_x=1&cp=11&qh=2vIqMtleFv9g1T8S7vEgUQ%3D%3D&new=1&rank=1&uidh=l37&redir=false&gss=angs-d&pcat=39&fh=7&h=1506706&recoff=&ml_rpos=8 Dave. edit, scrap that...same as clives suggestion, apologies. Admin Bob Davies Posted 13 October , 2019 Admin Share Posted 13 October , 2019 (edited) Yes there are quite a few of them. Possible contenders are; 9863 pte F. Bayliss RWF. Disembarked 13-8-14. Transferred to RE 14-12-15. / Or 9632 pte E. Bayliss. RWF. Disembarked 13-8-14. KIA 4-5-17.Posting this before I confuse myself. Both of these came from 14 star awards not MIC. Regards, Bob. Hywyn Posted 13 October , 2019 Share Posted 13 October , 2019 Could be 31420 Joseph Bayliss. Medal Rolls. 16th Bn & 15th Bn. SWB Roll enl 7 6 1915, disch 25 3 1919. Nil records apparent and haven't picked up on him on any casualty lists but he is in the WFA ledgers having had an amputated leg. Born 1895. Address of 3 Railway Cottages, Clyncorrwg, Port Talbot. clive_hughes Posted 13 October , 2019 Share Posted 13 October , 2019 Thank you Hywyn, my failing mental abilities couldn't quickly think of another forename beginning with J (despite my late father-in-law being a Joseph)!! He might well fit the bill. Clive
Trooper B Posted 13 October , 2019 Share Posted 13 October , 2019 Hi Clive, Not sure if I should start another thread but I am currently looking at finding out more on 89065 Pte George H Buck of RWF. My question is, were all recruits issued a service number from a list for RWF and then allocated to each Battalion as required, or did each Battalion have its own batch of numbers? sorry for my ignorance! Nice work :-)

Trooper B There were rough blocks for some battalions earlier on in the war. Your man has a high number. He was either transferred in or called up first week May 1918. His medal Roll shows he served with 2nd Bn. Haven't picked up anything else for him. Edited 13 October , 2019 by Hywyn
sadbrewer Posted 13 October , 2019 Share Posted 13 October , 2019 There's a BJ Bayliss 10836 Edit ...posted missing in Feb 1915.
Alisonmallen62 Posted 13 October , 2019 Share Posted 13 October , 2019 That photo seems familiar. Is it in ‘postcards’?
Trooper B Posted 13 October , 2019 Share Posted 13 October , 2019 Thanks for that info Hywyn, I guess with him being called up in May 1918 and having the War and Victory Medals he wouldn’t have made it to the front much before September or October of 1918?
