23rd Heavy Battery RGA

Recommended Posts

Have been trying to find the WD for the 23rd Heavy Battery RGA. No luck on Ancestry or the National Archives.

From my understanding  Heavy Batteries were a Div asset.

My interest in the Battery relates to a MM group of medals that have come into my possession relating to a 50875 Corporal N.W. Watson,

Any information or advice would be appreciated

Hi AC00,

The unit allocation appears to be:

Image sourced from the National Archives

Where for example it reads 16th HAG (Heavy Artillery Group) on the National Archives search page drop the 'th' and replace 'HAG' by 'Brigade Royal Garrison Artillery'.  Doing that should result in giving you these 'hits'

His MM appears to have been Gazetted on 12.6.1818, so you're probably looking for something in the diary a good couple of months, or so, earlier.

There is help on trying to research a MM here

Chris

No. A Corps or Army Asset. But mighty confusing to track down who was where, when and helping whom !

If at any stage it was 'attached' (I assume you mean as in 'supporting') then the 16 HAG War Diary will be the place to find out. But it may just have been transitory. Chris has given you the link to 16 HAG/Bde War Diaries. You will need a better idea of the event date that ties up with an MM award in that London Gazette.

16HAG remained part of First Army after Jan 1918 until the end of the war. But in which Corps ?- again the War Diary of 16HAG should tell you.

edit - looks like it was Canadian Corps for late March and April 1918 ...
