Compass case markings

I appreciate this is a long shot but I am looking for any info on the markings on this case.It is a 1916 Wolfsky & co containing a 1917 French Ltd compass with opposing double arrows indicating bought out of service. The full name is E.P.MAY.Can anyone help with  with the other markings.

ZIL,

 

It looks like E.P. May served with 2/(3 or 5)? Bn. of the Essex regiment.

CWGC gives only Earl Peter May, Pte, 39237, 12th (West Somerset Yeomanry) Bn, Somerset Light Infantry as a possible candidate amongst those who died.

I am sure that others more knowledgeable will be along soon.

Thanks JMB...brilliant....It was staring me in the face and I never saw it....it sometimes takes another set of eyes to see the obvious.

I can now follow this up.Interestingly the case and compass were found in a box of bits at a car boot sale in Carlisle.
