Rbecks66 Posted 24 December , 2021 Share Posted 24 December , 2021 I was recently gifted a bayonet. I know nothing about them and could use some help. I’m trying to learn anything I can about this bayonet. It appears to be a 1888mk1 2nd type but the markings have me confused because I cannot find any info to positively identify it. t.ryan Posted 24 December , 2021 Share Posted 24 December , 2021 (edited) It was a Mk 1 2nd Type that some one has removed the Locking Bolt from the Pommel and ground down the blade to make a fighting knife. Nice job of grinding the blade tho. The original blade would have been around 300 mm long. Looks like it was a clearly marked bayonet before being cut up. Made by Enfield in 11th Month 1898. Rbecks66 Posted 24 December , 2021 Author Share Posted 24 December , 2021 Appreciate the information. The shape of the blade had stumped. I’m learning a lot
trajan Posted 24 December , 2021 Share Posted 24 December , 2021 Rbecks66, That 'Bowie' shape is often associated with 'fighting knives', but my old Boy Scout knife has the same profile. All one can really say is that the bayonet has been modified to serve as a knife - could be for hunting, fishing, anything. The unit marking ('V / 2 LAN') is for the 2nd Volunteer Batt. 'Kings Own' = Royal Lancashire Regiment. I am no expert on the regimental history so you will need to research that! An RSAF product, the markings on the tang are the usual P.1888 inspector markings
Dave66 Posted 24 December , 2021 Share Posted 24 December , 2021 Great conversion, Wiki has reference to 1st Volunteers Royal Lancaster, but can’t see any reference to 2nd….has to be a pre 1908 thing so within a 10 year window.. regimental history here….http://www.kingsownmuseum.com/index.htm Dave. According to https://web.archive.org/web/20061231200330/http://www.regiments.org/regiments/uk/volmil-england/vinf-no/cu-KO45.htm apparently based on original documentation the 2 Vol Batt was formed in 1900. trajan Posted 25 December , 2021 Share Posted 25 December , 2021 And the same to all of you P1888 afficionados (and sparring partners!) from a warmer than yesterday (only -4 now!) Ankara, a place where Christmas is not really celebrated but simply acknowledged as as 'Baba Noel Gunu'! Julian
