Dido Posted 7 August , 2022 Share Posted 7 August , 2022 In a narrative wrotten in 1928 by Greek Admiral Lykoudis, head of the light house service, he mentions that during WW1 and after 1915 an Allied cargo ship was wrecked at Lefteris Reef, between Skiathos and Pilion in Greece. He mentions that the wreck remained on the reef for several years. The photograph is supposed to depict the said vessel. Sorry for the watermark but this is how it was provided. Can someone help identify the lost vessel? Lefteris reef is notorious for claiming several ships such as the German cargo ship Volos in 1931. KizmeRD Posted 7 August , 2022 Share Posted 7 August , 2022 I believe that it was in fact a French ship, grounded there sometime during 1915. It was part of a convoy that was supplying Allied forces in Salonika. MB
Dido Posted 7 August , 2022 Author Share Posted 7 August , 2022 (edited) She could be French. But I guess you don't mean the French CEYLAN (see https://forum.pages14-18.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=44261 ) that did went aground in that region in late 1915 but was refloated soon. KizmeRD Posted 7 August , 2022 Share Posted 7 August , 2022 No, definitely not a hospital ship - a much smaller cargo vessel that remained on the reef for many years. Here’s another photo… MB
Dido Posted 7 August , 2022 Author Share Posted 7 August , 2022 Yes that's her, I would say somewhere between 1,500-3,000 grt.
KizmeRD Posted 7 August , 2022 Share Posted 7 August , 2022 Or even less… The caption that went with the newspaper cutting didn’t specify the name, but if it was part of a Salonika convoy in 1915, then it had to have run aground sometime in October to December that year.
