Chasemuseum Posted 30 October , 2022 Share Posted 30 October , 2022 I think its an equipment box rather than an ammo box. For ammo boxes they tried to keep the different variations of latches flush with the box so they were less likely to get caught/broken in handling. As for date - not easy, could be either war
museumtom Posted 31 October , 2022 Share Posted 31 October , 2022 We had them in the Irish Army 50 years ago and they were old then and I am sure they might still be used by them. We used them for many things one of which was for holding the bayonets beside the gun racks. The Quartermasters used them for storing various items. They are sturdy and well made and I have one beside me full of bits and bobs which I bought in a car boot for 20 euro a few years ago.

Gunner Bailey Posted 1 November , 2022 Share Posted 1 November , 2022 (edited) That type of lock/clasp (and some variants) was used on Naval boxes. I have seen them on Depth Charge pistol boxes and some fuze boxes. Certainly used through WW2. Box shown may not have original partitions in it.
