Hi

I am researching Clement Ashworth RAMC No 102273. His army record states "Transferred to No 7 Mesopotamia Reinforcement 2 Sep 1916".

I would like to know what this was and can anyone read the dates at the bottom of this page from the record? He did become seriously ill with dysentery and was transferred to hospitals in India.

Many thanks, Tony

Early 1916 the level of medical support in Mespot was pitiful. A Commission eventually reported and improvements were progressively made.

I presume thus that through 1916 there would be significant drafts of medical personnel to Mespot and he must have been in the 7th?

Best guess after converting to a negative image and a little 'tweaking':

Home 29.9.15 to 30.8.16

?? 31.8.6 to 13.12.16

?? 14.12.16 to 28.11.19

?? 29.11.19 to 31.1.20

There is not a lot of ink there to enhance, but together with his record it appears to say

Home 30 Sep 1915 to 30 Aug 1916

Mespot 31 Aug 1916 to 13 Dec 1916

India 14 Dec 1916 to 30 Nov 1919

Home 1 Dec 1919 to 31 Jan 1920

Some extra bits for you.

He was from Darwen, as were several near numbered men. All part of RAMC HH , Home Hospital Reserve. Some later went to France, some to Mespot.

Another Darwen man whose record gives a bit more info, went out in the same 7th Mespot Reinforcements.

His file has this useful detail on the journey out from Dublin. Their 'Peace Ststion' 14th Coy RAMC to which they both belonged was in Dundalk.

Once they landed Basra 8/10/16 they will have been dispersed to different medical outfits.

102275 Babington was posted to 39 Field Ambulance at Amara which he joined 24/10/16.

102277 Burgess was also first posted to 39 Field Ambulance, having come out in the same batch, no7 Reinforcements.

There are other near-number records that survive that might add a bit? Seems like a bit of strong local enlistment. Maybe worked in same mill?

Anyway, your man Ashworth seems to have been first admitted seriously ill with dysentery 14/10/16, within a few days of arrival. There is mention of Amara on his medical record but I suggest he probably no time do do anything in Mespot before being evacuated to India.

Charlie.

Mespot medical war diaries exist in many forms and quite often mention names of staff. But given Ashworth's very brief stay I suspect it not worth too much time trawling through?
