He was appointed a Temporary 2nd Lieutenant in The Welsh Regiment from the ranks of the Royal Engineers on 15 May 1915 and served with the regiment until 29 February 1916 when he was transferred to the Welsh Divisional Engineers as a Temporary 2nd Lieutenant. The Derbyshire Courier 29th May 1915 records James' as being gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in the 12th Battalion, Welsh Regiment. Regads Gunner 87.
