Good to hear about this. I walked the route of the night attack in Delville Wood and visited the memorial stone to the battalion's two VCs yesterday.

The incident is described in the original battalion war diary. Direct mention was edited out of the version of the war diary published after the war but it does appear in C.H. Dudley Ward's official history of the regiment. The episode is also briefly and rather vaguely referred to in the Essex Regimental history, although the other unit is not named.
