This photograph may be of some interest to forum members - a fortuitous recent acquisition insofar as the auctioneers had not referenced it or provided an image of it in a Lot of ‘military photographs’.

A named original photo taken by photographer F. Scovell of Aldershot of 3 Troop, C Squadron, 11th Hussars - the Troop which was to charge the German guns towards the end of the action at Nery on 1st September 1914.
Taken between Feb 1913 & the outbreak of war.

Unfortunately, surnames only with no initials to aid positive identification and with a couple of spelling mistakes thrown in, but having referenced the medal rolls and the C Squadron embarkation list of Aug 1914, and for future searches, the following is my best attempt thus far at identifying those present:

A super photo and especially interesting for me in that it demonstrates that the 11th Hussars officers opted for the new, ‘Type B’ pattern of Blue Patrol uniform** when it was introduced as an option in the 1911 Dress Regulations for officers of the Army.  Seated next to the officer is the Troop Sergeant Major with fencing and gymnastics prize, who is wearing the OR’s version of blue patrol jacket.

**with open, stepped rever collar, white shirt, and corded black silk necktie.

Lieutenant C.W. “Moke Norrie” got a Mention in Depatches, page 5982 Supplement to the London Gazette, 22 June, 1915. https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/29200/supplement/5982

This list of names relates to Sir John Frenchs’ despatch dated 5th April 1915, as stated on page 5975.

This was Sir Johns seventh despatch and covered February and March 1915, including the Battle of Neuve Chappelle. https://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/battles/british-field-commanders-despatches/sir-john-frenchs-seventh-despatch-neuve-chapelle/

A Captain C.W. “Moke-Norrie” M.C. also received a Mention in Despatches while serving on the Staff (‘Commands 9 Staff’), London Gazette 20th December 1918 page 14931 – MiD card at the National Archive. https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D6518929
(The actual appearance in the list just shows 11th Hussars) https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/31077/supplement/14931

Became Baron Norrie – see Wikipedia page with images from later in life here which adds

“Educated at Eton College and at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant into the British Army's 11th Hussars in 1913. He served in the First World War, in which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order, the Military Cross and Bar, was twice mentioned in despatches, and was wounded four times. He became, successively, a Staff Captain in the 73rd Brigade; General Staff Officer Grade 3 (GSO3) in XVIII Corps; brigade major in the 90th Brigade, and in the 2nd Tank Brigade; and second GSO in the 2nd Battalion, Tank Corps. In January 1919 he changed his name by deed poll from Moke-Norrie to Norrie.”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willoughby_Norrie,_1st_Baron_Norrie

Also see a (low quality) picture of him from the 1930’s when he commanded the 10th Hussars in India at https://www.britishempire.co.uk/forces/10thhussarscharlesnorrie.htm

Nothing obviously for him in the Eton College online archive.

His gazetting as a Second Lieutenant in the 11th Hussars, effective 5th February 1913, appears on page 845 of The London Gazette, 4th February, 1913.. https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/28687/page/845/data.pdf

However while others from Eton College who were at Sandhurst get a mention in the February and March 1913 editions of the Eton College Chronicles, Moke-Norrie is not one of them. https://archives.etoncollege.com/authenticated/Browse.aspx?BrowseID=140&tableName=ta_chronicles

Perhaps a forum member like @delta may be aware of other Great War images from his time on the staff of the Tanks Corps.

Cheers,
Peter
