William's wife, Rose Ann, died on the 3rd December 1948, Sunderland Echo and Shipping Gazette, 04 December 1948

Yes, no idea there. It's definitely our man as I just messaged one of the family and asked if his grandfather, ie: William's son, was called Bernard and he's replied in the affirmative.

The 1939 National Register shows that Rose was still living at Seaham Harbour with her children (image courtesy of Find My Past)

There is no sign of William, he must have been in the Royal Artillery when the register was taken.
