Awarding of "ribbons" in the field

A quick question.  For mentions in war diaries of "ribbons" being awared in the field, would this refer to an actual strip of ribbon for the medal in question, with the full medal to be awarded at a later point?  And if so, would this mean that ribbons for gallantry decorations were sewn onto tunics and worn in the field and at the front soon after they were awarded?

Thank you
