It is a long way from Fleurbaix. There are three places on sheet 36 (for Fleurbaix), Essex, Essex Central Farm and Essex House. Just search for Essex alone in the box. weshallremember Posted 5 July Author Share Posted 5 July (edited) thanks for your reply Howard i think now they were a bit further south or south east of Flerbaix itself do you know what map grid reference is above 36 SW N9 C thanks trevor Edited 5 July by weshallremember
Howard Posted 5 July Share Posted 5 July You can use TrenchMapper for that. Enter your reference formatted as per the original manner with dots, i.e. 36.N.9.C (The SW is not used in references, it is part of a sheet name ) TM will jump to that place. Now you can move the mouse over the map and the map reference will update continuously in the lower left of the screen. You may find it easier to change the map filter to 1:40,000 to range over a larger area. Help on map references in Help->Knowledge Centre-How to read a trench map. Howard Posted 6 July Share Posted 6 July Now you have some names, you can get there very quickly in TrenchMapper, just put Nephew or Necklace into Search. Nephew pops up at about 36.N.9.d.7.2 Then you can select from more than 100 maps in the left panel. You can use Street View to look around the local roads or change the opacity to see the modern aerial view. Howard

Chris_Baker Posted 8 July Share Posted 8 July (edited) For info, this is covered in detail in my book "The Battle of the Lys - South - Objective Ypres". It is also explained in a talk on the subject which you will find on Youtube, called "Six miles from victory".
