looking at a medal roll for 290718 Francis henry Bentley

it says he was originally in the 7th WELSH REGIMENT which i understand were cyclist battalions

then it says  18TH WELSH ATTACHED TO 40TH DIVISION EMPLOYMENT COMPANY BASE DEPOT

any idea where that was ????

and what his duties were????

after he was transferred to the  front with the 18th welsh battalion

any idea when that would have been

many thanks

I would interpret this as follows, but would like to see what others think

Arrives in F&F, is sent to an Infantry Base Depot
Is posted to 18th (Service) Battalion, within 40th Division
I presume his fitness is not good enough for him to be in the front line, so he is attached to 40 Division's Employment Company, to be a labourer
His health recovers, so he returns to the 18th (Service) Battalion, but is killed in action on 10 April 1918

Here is a link to the composition of the various units in 40th Division

Divisional Employment Companies were part of the Labour Corps

It appears that as well as lower medical grade men those Div Emp Coy were allowed to have a number of A1 men too

Payment of £14 18s 3d

Are those from his Register of Soldiers' Effects entry?

What was his War Gratuity? - for those who can do the calc that might offer an enlistment date

From WFA/Fold3 pension records:

His widow, Elizabeth BENTLEY. b. 31.3.89, lived at 6A Adswood Lane, Stockport, and got a widow's standard 13/9 pw from 16.12.18 [under the 1918 Royal Warrant = under 45 widow of a pension Class V soldier/Pte - and no child(ren)] plus a £5 Grant paid 31.5.20.  The MoP records show he was Unpaid Acting LCpl - so paid/substantive rank of Pte used for his widow's pension.

There is a note underneath which states that it 'includes War Gratuity £9 10/-'

Yes, this is from the register of soldiers' effects.

Whilst issued a service number from the service number block associated with the 7th TF Battalion, Welsh Regiment, I think he was with one of the iterations of the battalion in Britain, and was then transferred across the English Channel.

Now I am by no means expert - but I think that represents 25 months' service WG to his death [so between 24 & 25 months service].

Somebody who really knows their stuff, please check that!
