Would it be The Green Fields of France (by Eric Bogle)? Sung here by June Tabor.

There was this short BBC programme in 2016 "Roan Cottage, Co. Armagh: Private William McBride" about the songs origins in the World War One at Home series.

I have always found the BBC helpful with queries about past programmes & in doing so discovered they have their full programme listings back to the 1920's.
