The medal index cards were laid out into batches of 6 and were photographed in 1989. The images were then stored as microform. Both the index cards and the medal rolls were in the possession of the Army Medal Office at Droitwich.

The original medal index cards were going to be thrown away, but were saved by the Western Front Association. They were scanned as colour images by Ancestry.

The National Archives were able to use the microform to make the medal index card images that can be downloaded.

In 2011, it became possible to search the silver war badge rolls on Ancestry. I'm not sure when those rolls, and the WW1 campaign medal rolls - archive series WO 329 - were transferred to Kew, though.

It was before 2004, clearly

If you look at the SWB rolls at the NA you will clearly see everyone is individually numbered.

The medal index cards, archive series WO 372, are available via TNA, in groups of six cards. They are in black and white, and are converted from the microfiche images photographed (at Droitwich?) in 1985

The medal cards were returned to the Army Medal Office after the B&W images were taken.

You can find medal office annotations on the Ancestry versions that are not present on the TNA ones. These are usually date stamps following an enquiry.

That may be an indexing issue or of course it's possible that the B/W scanning missed one.

I have an MIC that isn't on either site!
