Ubiquitous "P" Markings on French Maps

I have yet to come across a legend that describes what the symbol "P" represents.  This symbol appears ubiquitously on French WW-1 period maps. (See attached example.)

Does a "P" represent the location of a "well" (i.e., "puit")?  If not, what?

Thanks in advance.

Jim

I don't know but there seems to be a lot of them and not associated with buildings per se so maybe not wells.

Someone must know the answer.

I wonder if it is springs?  Based on just the letter P rather than Pts.

Pasture (Pâturage) or Meadow (Prairie) maybe?

Yes, I figured some map expert out there would know what "P" stands for in this situation. :(
