Had the Merchant Navy Day Service on Maldon's Hythe Quay today. Pleased to mention the GW contribution.

Royal Naval Reserve

Skipper - HOWARD, GEORGE WILLIAM

Ty Skipper (SA.721) Royal Naval Reserve (HM Trawler Remindo – GY1063)

Born in Maldon on 15/2/1879. Son of William Howard [born 1855,  a shipwright who worked for his brother, John Howard, MINA, IMC, yacht builder and designer, The Shipways, Maldon] and Mary Ann Howard (née Hicks whose family had the Three Cups PH, Wantz Road, Maldon) of 196 High Street, Maldon. (Following William’s death in 1890, Mary Ann re-married Daniel Laythorpe, skipper of the ‘Record Reign’, and landlord of the Castle Inn, North Street, Maldon). Prior to the war George William Howard was; a mate on sailing barge ‘Thistle’ (possibly of Burnham) out of Millwall Dock; was on HM vessels at Devonport; and formerly a Second Hand in the Trawler Section before promotion. Died 2/2/1918 (aged 38)

Chatham Naval Memorial (30)

HM Trawler Remindo was a former Grimsby Trawler (Admiralty number 3065) built in 1917 and requisitioned as an anti-submarine vessel, fitted with hydrophone equipment. It was reported missing, presumed mined and lost with all (20) hands off Portland. The Germans later claimed it was torpedoed by UC79. See also (137) A.G. Wright.

Leading Deck Hand - KEEBLE, ALFRED

Leading Deck Hand (119150) Royal Naval Reserve (HM Trawler Arctic Prince)

Son of Walter and Elizabeth of 86 Mill Road, Maldon. [M]

Died 15/4/1917 (aged 35)

Chatham Naval Memorial (26)

On the 14/4/1917 this trawler struck a mine which killed 4 men. It was possibly minesweeping along the Kola Peninsula, towards Murmansk

Deck Hand - WRIGHT, ARTHUR GEORGE

Deck Hand (16945DA) Royal Naval Reserve (HM Trawler Remindo – GY1063)

Son of Samson W. Wright and Maud A. Wright of 4 Victoria Road, Maldon. [M] [T6]

Died 2/2/1918 (aged 19)

Deck Hand - WRIGHT, ALBERT WILLIAM

Deck Hand (14600DA) Royal Naval Reserve (HM Drifter Dewey)

Born in Maldon in 1893. Son of Arthur Henry Wright [fisherman and shopkeeper] and Agnes Ellen Wright of 197 High Street, Maldon. [M] [T126]

Died 12/8/1917 (aged 24)

Chatham Naval Memorial (26)

HMD Dewey was run down and sunk by the S.S. Glenifer, near the Royal Sovereign LV. As a result, 11 men including Albert Wright were drowned at sea. His name is included on the family grave in Maldon Cemetery. [V]

 

Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve

Able Seaman - WARD, ARTHUR

Able Seaman (R/380) Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve (Drake Battalion)

Born at Layham, Suffolk, on 3/3/1898. Son of George Ward of Lower Raydon, Suffolk, and then of 6 Fullbridge, Maldon. Arthur Ward was an engine driver before the war. [T74]

Died June 1920 (aged 22)

(No CWGC record)

Joined Army Reserve 2/4/1916. Entered Royal Navy Division 20/10/1916. Suffered from shell shock, was gassed and invalided to the United Kingdom. Demobed 24/2/1919.

Though not from Maldon = Thank you for commemorating the Merchant Navy [and Mercantile Marine before]

I always visit the MN memorial/MN Convoy Wood at the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas ... and would encourage others to do so.  https://www.thenma.org.uk

Have a close family member who was in the MN [and an in law's relative who was in the MM before] who survived their respective wartime service - but I don't think such service was a 'cushy billet' [far from it in so many cases] ... So my/our great thanks should go out to them all.
