MelPack Posted 6 September Share Posted 6 September Hello Michel Thanks for posting the photographs of the new extension that will be officially inaugurated on 26 September next. The two boards featured in the photos ere presumably the graves prepared for the burial of the two British Unknowns scheduled for the inauguration date? Do you have any information on when the existing graves were established?

MelPack Posted 6 September Share Posted 6 September Ah - is the inscription on the gravestones "An Unknown Soldier of the Great War" meaning the nationality of the remains were indeterminate ?
battle of loos Posted 6 September Author Share Posted 6 September Good evening, Nationality must have been determined by the discovery of objects and buttons, title & cap badge but without the number on the cutlery or other personal items. the graves of unknown soldiers presented here were found on the construction sites; - Expansion of the commercial area (cleared wood - Hugo) - construction of the prison on Hill 70 - construction of the new hospital in Lens The German soldiers were handed over to the German authorities. No French soldiers in this specific area. michel

KGB Posted 7 September Share Posted 7 September I was perplexed when I visited Loos, to visit Irish graves. Two locals girls said "Yes, the English cemetery". I replied "Irish". "Oh, they are all English". Pointing out that Canadians, Scots, Welsh, Aussies, Kiwis were not English they shrugged their shoulders.
Ian Lyall Posted 7 September Share Posted 7 September We were present at Cabaret Rouge for the rededications on July 2nd. After the ceremony my wife and I were talking to the Padre who had taken the service and the Military Attaché from Paris, who said they were going up to Loos to see the new burials
