AIF 14th Battalion 7th Reinforcement - Uniform Help

Please bear with me, as I am only new to this.  My query concerns a family relative who enlisted in the Australian 14th battalion 7th reinforcements circa August 1916.  What I am really interested in atm is his uniform, as you will see below.  Can anyone shed some light on this for me please?  I think he has a red Maltese Cross on his pith helmet, and is possibly wearing a red jacket with (metal?) numbers on his collar, perhaps reading A127 ….
