8 Northumberland Fusiliers

Hi everyone,

I am currently researching the 8th (Service) Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers in WW1, with a view to, hopefully, publishing a battalion history. I have the various war diaries etc but what I'm really in need of are the personal stories, the anecdotes,  the letters home, the photographs etc.

I'm hoping to hear from anyone who had a relative, or from anyone who has any information on anyone who served in that battalion during the First World War.

Many hopeful thanks

Dave

Hi Dave,

My Great Great Grandfather, John Gowland, served with this battalion at Gallipoli and The Somme where he was killed on the 26th September 1916 at 23 years old. I am myself looking for more information on this battalion and only know of their actions at Moquet Farm on Theipval ridge. He was born in Byker in 1893 and if you know anyone who’s come forward from soldiers born there and served in the battalion would be awesome to get in touch with them to find more information out.

regards,

Jack

This is Private John W. Gowland’s letter marking the 8th Service Battalion’s Combat Actions of that day on the 26th of September 1916 which states of him being killed in action. Today I learnt that he was only a few days shy of his 23rd birthday when he was killed and not actually 23.

Hi

I have researched my grandfather 4741 Private John Lumley Humble 8th (Service) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers.

Born Seaham Colliery 1884.  Enlisted 1914 address Farndale Rd. Benwell, Newcastle.  Theatres of war Suvla Bay Gallipoli, Egypt and Somme, France.

Killed age 32  26/09/1916 Somme.  Exhumation Re-Burial 09/04/1919 Regina Trench Cemetery.

My mother told me as far as she knew the only time he saw her was when he was on leave prior to going overseas. She was born 03/02/1915.

The book My Own Darling, Letters from Montie to Kitty Carlisle was a big help in following the battalion.  On page 188 it reads - See Alan Angus Reminiscences.

An Officer who watched the attack 26/09/1916 on Mouquet Farm, Zollern and Stuff Redoubts the day my grandfather was killed.

My library has searched but failed.  Has anyone any information about Alan Angus Reminiscences please.

Welcome to the forum David, it’s not helpful to make multiple posts about the same subject as it causes confusion and repetition of answers. I’ve merged your two posts.

Hi David,

The editor of My Own Darling likely consulted some other sets of documents at the Imperial War Museum which likely included: https://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/1030000968

I think you would need to visit the IWM in Kensington to view these having booked a seat in their reading room in advance.

Regards

Colin
