chrisharley9 Posted 6 October , 2005 Share Posted 6 October , 2005 Does any one have any info on this vessel. The absent voter list for Grimsby shows my great uncle Issac Cutting serving on this vessel - I suspect it might be a fishing vessel of some kind. Any info would be appreciated. Malcolm Posted 6 October , 2005 Share Posted 6 October , 2005 KOSMOS, was an Aberdeen registered trawler hired for use as a minesweper in April 1915 and returned 1919 as already mentioned. She was 231 tons, launched in 1916 and her Port No was A617, Admiralty No 3237. Not to be confused with the drifter Cosmos. Aye Malcolm

Derek Robertson Posted 25 November , 2005 Share Posted 25 November , 2005 My heartfelt thanks - just for the record what is known about the COSMOS <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Can anything else be added to the story of H.M. Drifter "Cosmos."?
Michael Lowrey Posted 26 November , 2005 Share Posted 26 November , 2005 Can anything else be added to the story of H.M. Drifter "Cosmos."? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well, she was one of eight drifters sunk on Feb. 15, 1918 during a raid by German destroyers of the II. T-Flottille. At least three additional vessels were damaged. The II. T-Flottille was Germany-based and equiped with the most powerful destroyers. The unit was employed as essentially an elite raiding force in late 1917 and early 1918. These were some of the same ships that worked over a convoy on Dec. 12, 1917, sinking 11 vessels w/o loss. Best wishes, Michael
