The Collector & Researchers Guide to the Great War

It is a set of two volumes that has a lot of very useful information on medals (Volume 1) and other WWI related items (Volume II). As far as I know the print run sold out and supposedly it will not be reprinted. Great War Medals still had copies in their last list and I would guess a few more copies are still for sale by other vendors.

There were two volumes, the first as sold above is the medals voulme, the second covered general 14-18 militaria. They were only published in a very limited run and soon sold out. Some previous discussion and helpful stuff here:

Indispensable. Three weeks ago the NA Bookshop still had two sets.

I was thinking about bidding on a copy of Volume One on ebay until the vendor told me it would cost US $40.00 for shipping!

Duncan,

My wife bought me the 2 volumes last year, absolutely excellent privately published books, Howard Williamson is to be congratulated on an outstanding contriubtion to First War research.

Duncan,

I bought mine from Howard at the Britannia medal fair in London just after they were published,if I remember rightly,he told me that there was a limited print of 1500 of each volume.

These books are really excellent,I would strongly suggest that you get them if you can,as they are likely to become quite scarce in the future.

I believe that Howard is a member of this forum,I'm sure he can point you in the right direction even if he no longer has any for sale himself.

I have just seen one volume in Ypres and turned to a few subject areas in which I am knowledgeable, and am glad I did not part with such a great deal of cash.

Examples: the Officers' and NCOs' rank and appointment badges are [from memory, as I did not buy the book!] a lift from a 1935 publication, warts and all;

wound badges were, he says, for each wound, rather than each occasion wounded.

Nit-picking?

I know it is not possible to write a book without error: I am rather good at writing books with errors, but there are lots of people about who could have proof-read or advised. As there are many areas where I am NOT knowledgeable, I could now not use this book as an authority having seen it.

If I am wrong, I will be happy to retract.

I have Volume 1 and yes, I would agree with Grumpy that it does have a bit of a compendium feel to it. However, it does contain a lot of useful information and keeps it in one place. Being woefully ignorant, I cannot comment on just how authoratative it is in total.

Stu - I think duplicate posts can be deleted. Perhaps a better option that adding another post commenting on the duplication ! ;)

I have a set bought at the OMRS London medal Fair two years back. I use it very much as a compendium to dip in and out of. Lots of useful information e.g. naming styles on the WW1 stars but not all that well organised and it hops about a bit. A labour of love published privately and hence unlikely to be reprinted. Has anyone read this book? What's it like, any good?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...A%3AIT&rd=1

Any idea why it's not in the shops?

Duncan.

Its an old thread I know, but just a quick note to say Ive just listed my Vols I & II on Ebay.

Virtually unused.

If anyone on here is interested in them let me know and i'll end the Ebay auction and deal privately if required. As long as thee are no ebay bids on it already.

Im not out to make a killing.
