I am currently looking into this MG company, with a view in trying to establish whether a particular soldier served with it. His MGC number was 3816. The MGC soldiers whose numbers were 3815 & 3818 are mentioned in the war diary, having been wounded in July 1916. If this Coy was formed by brigading an existing MG unit my this might be enough evidence. But if formed at Grantham from a draft, I need to do some more digging. Advice please.

Thanks,

Ian

Formed Feb 16; formation sign was a blue rectangle with white diagonal cross, worn upright. NFI on place of formation - but those units formed at Grantham are usually (but not infallibly) so indicated.

I'd back your hunch on unit formation, but could delve further on the man.

Phil - Persistance has paid off - Pte Lewis is mentioned in the War Diary of the 55th MG Coy as having been wounded on 14 June 1916 during a heavy bombardment of the line. A wound that led to his discharge in February 1917.
