Guest paul james Posted 6 December , 2003 Share Posted 6 December , 2003 A question: My grandfather served with the 2 (Garrison) Northumberland Fusiliers in India after serving with the 8 Welsh at Galliopli and in Mesopotamia. I am wondering why he was switched. Could it be that he was unfit for regular duties with his original batallion? He did have malaria among other things. Did GBs also guard POWs? charlesmessenger Posted 6 December , 2003 Share Posted 6 December , 2003 Garrison bns were formed from Medical category B men in the Kitchener New Armies in the second half of 1915. Their purpose was to relieve Territorial Force units which had been deployed to various parts of the Empire in 1914 to relieve Regular units, who were brought back to Europe. This would enable the TF units to take a more active part in the war. Others were formed in spring 1916. At the same time, Garrison Reserve bns were created to keep the Garrison bns supplied with men and Home Service Garrison battalions were also formed from men not fit enough to serve overseas.
