The fuller CWGC entry:

JOHN LINDLEY GODLEY

Lieutenant, attd. 286th Coy., Machine Gun Corps (Inf) who died on

Sunday 31 August 1919 .

Additional Information: (Buried Peshawar (Right) B.C. XXVI. 780.)

Cemetery: DELHI MEMORIAL (INDIA GATE) India

His index entry says 'Rifle Brigade'; any self-respecting Greenjacket would have a fit to see it described as 'Rifle Brigade Regiment' - they were THE Brigade! 286 Coy MGC were a post-war formation, formed to support 4th (Indian) Division, and part of the MGC's 204 Bn. (The Bn never fought as a formation; it was an HQ only, the Companies being assigned direct to the Division). It saw service in India and the 3rd Afghan War of 1919, and was disbanded in May 1920, where the constituent units formed a reconstituted 8 Bn MGC, for Indian service.

Phil,

Thank you for information re. John Godley this fellow trained as a Teacher at St. Marks College, Chelsea which is probably why he finished up in the Rifle Brigade instead of the Notts & Derby Regt., He was serving in India in October 1917 according to a notice in the local press the puzzle is how he died after the end of the 14/18 war which warranted him appearing on the War Memorial.
