He was wounded on 1st July, and spent 3 days in a shell hole with the great-uncle of a friend before making it back to British lines, and from there a hospital in Blighty. I hope to track him down at the PRO one day soon, but thought that a Somme or 36th Div expert might by some chance already know something. Many thanks.
