ebo Posted 5 September , 2003 Share Posted 5 September , 2003 can anyone help explain what a seige battery was? Also any info. on this particular unit would be very useful. I think they were in the Egypt area. What actions would they have taken part in? Thanks
Greenwoodman Posted 6 September , 2003 Share Posted 6 September , 2003 A Siege Battery does exactly what it says on the tin It is a section of guns (in 51st Siege Bty's case 6 x 6" Howitzers) which lays siege to fortified positions, such as concrete defensive complexes. The RGA's tasks also covered counter-battery work and coastal defence. I can't find much in my sources on the 51st, except that on 11th November 1918 it was in 17th Brigade, Third Army. I'm sure one of the Pals will have chapter and verse tucked up his/her sleeve!
