roger Posted 6 September , 2003 Share Posted 6 September , 2003 Does anyone have any info on 15th company Army Cyclist Corps? One of the men commemorated on our local war memorial belonged to this unit. His details are as follows, HENRY BULLOCK (Name on war Memorial) Private 7891 15th Coy., Army Cyclist Corps who died on Tuesday 4 July 1916 . Age 25 DOW Son of Edwin and Maria Bullock, of 44, Beech Avenue, Hawton Ville, Newark. Native of Hougham, Lincs. MERICOURT-L'ABBE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION Somme, France Born, Marston, Lincs. Enlisted, Richmond. Resided, Bedale. HERBERT BULLOCK (Name on SDGW) It looks as if he was wounded during early the stages of the Battle of the Somme. Am I right in understanding Cyclist Companies were attached to Divisions as recce troops and messengers? If so what larger organisation were 15th Company part of? Roger. charlesmessenger Posted 6 September , 2003 Share Posted 6 September , 2003 Each division went France with a Cyclist Coy. 15th Coy was part of 15th Scottish Division. In November 1914 these coys were formed into the Army Cyclist Corps. This was separate to the Territorial Cyclist battalions, brigades, and later division, which were part of the home defence forces in Britain. In summer 1916 the div cyclist coys were formed into Corps Cyclist bns. With the advent of trench warfare their reconnaissance role became very resticted and these coys were ued for a ariety of odd jobs. Many ended up manning Observation Posts. roger Posted 6 September , 2003 Author Share Posted 6 September , 2003 Thankyou Charles. Would the 15th company still have been part of 15th Division at the beginning of July 1916? Roger
