possibly the Allenbury mask, which had mica eye pieces and a pad mouth piece. There is a famous photo of two men using a vermoral sprayer wearing similar masks. But not 100% sure if those are Allenbury's.
Not to presume Joe, but do you mean Allen & Hanburys - as I've seen a mask by that company c. 1915 (below). I assume they're rare - perhaps more so than the Hypo, P etc? Also illustrated is a box of capsules (complete) by John Bell & Croyden (apologies for picture quality).

The two hypo helmets, w bags, below belonged to Sjt. B Coates of the RE (Special Bde).
I remember when this group of helmets etc came up for auction - truly outstanding set, and I was very disappointed not to be in a position to compete at the time. Well done Joe for securing them.

The Allen & Hanbury mask - it's not a hood - has two button holes that attach to the cap buttons; with ties for round the head/ cap. IMHO it would be pretty useless in the event.

Best wishes,

Grovetown.

My bad....A bit more googling has revealed Allenburys as a brand of Allen & Hanburys - so one and the same.

Best wishes,

GT.

Quote, Joe Sweeney: "It looks like it might be the instructions to some type of commercial/semi commercial mask"

Hi Joe,

I thought that was probably the case.

Some great photographs - and nice to see orignal kit which can be identified to individual soldiers.

Cheers,

Taff

Grovetown,

Thanks. I would not have known they were one and the same.

Taff,

Yes Coates items were a nice set. I tried to get everything but ran out of funds fairly quickly--but I'm on the trail to re-unite what I did not get as I hate breaking up groups.

Joe,

The Coates collection was certainly superb - and I agree totally about keeping collections together. I hope you manage to track the rest of it down.

Cheers,

Taff

  • 1 month later...

I have a question for all you lucky satchel owners.

This is a Hypo Helmet in the RE Museum which I reproduced in my 1991 Military Illustrated article. At the time I said that the ‘DF’ on the satchel indicated Debenham and Freebody but have since come round to the view that it was added by the owner, Sgt David Forgan, 10th Gordons. Has anyone ever seen this mark on a bag, or anywhere else?

Many thanks

Simon

Hi Simon

As you know, Debenham & Freebody was a department store in Wigmore Street, seeming to specialise in textiles, fashion etc. To that extent, it's not incredible that they produced such items a la the A&N and Co-Op.

However, while it doesn't rule the use of the DF monogram out; a search on eBay reveals around 50 items from the company - including a good number of Great War period adverts. In not one is the company styled DF in this way.

Best wishes,

Grovetown.

Thank you Grovetown, your eBay search backs up what I suspected.
