Paul Reed Posted 24 September , 2003 Share Posted 24 September , 2003 He was on a recce patrol, one of many trying to find out where the Germans were before Mons. They came under fire - accounts differ whether it was rifle or shrapnel fire - and he was hit. His body was abandoned by his mates as they wisely beat the retreat, and he was buried by the Germans.
