Worcesters

On my visits to the western front I have noticed that the word "Firm" is engraved above the Regimental crest of the Worcesters. Can anyone tell me why?

It's just a bit of idle curiosity.

In the Regimental badge and in the centre of the Regimental Colours the motto FIRM of the old 36th Regiment was combined with the Royal Lion of the old 29th Regiment to form one device, symbolising the union of those two Regiments in The Worcestershire Regiment.

The exact origin as to why he word FIRM was chosen as the motto of the 36th.Foot

is unknown. It was however possibly granted for rearguard action at Lauffeld in 1747 when other regiments involved in the battle 'broke' under fire.
