Muerrisch Posted 28 September , 2003 Share Posted 28 September , 2003 Here's a puzzle. Headstone at Coxyde CWGCC says "Signaller X, Duke of Wellington's Regt". Register says "Private". Now, I wonder how they came to do that? Photo in camera, film going in tomorrow.
Paul Reed Posted 28 September , 2003 Share Posted 28 September , 2003 I have seen this a few times; for it to be on the headstone, it would have to have been information provided by the next of kin. They must have been aware that their son was a signaller, a rank that (as far as I know) did not exist at that time, certainly not in an infantry battalion. All signallers were Privates (or above).
